Riccia fluitans, commonly known as Crystalwort, is a beloved and versatile liverwort that has been a staple in the aquascaping hobby since Takashi Amano famously tied it to rocks and driftwood to create lush, bright green foreground textures. Its delicate, branching thallus forms dense, cushion-like mats of vivid emerald green that sparkle with oxygen bubbles under good lighting — one of the most visually rewarding sights in a planted aquarium.

Why Tissue Culture?

Our tissue culture plants are grown in sterile laboratory conditions, meaning they arrive:

  • Free from pesticides and harmful chemicals
  • Free from snails, planarians, and pest algae
  • Free from pathogens and parasites
  • No rock wool to remove — just rinse and plant

Tips for Success

Riccia does not root into substrate, so it must be tied or anchored to rocks, driftwood, or mesh to keep it in place. Use fishing line or cotton thread to secure it to hardscape, or allow it to float freely on the surface as a natural refuge for fry and shrimp. It grows quickly and will need regular trimming to prevent the lower layers from dying off. CO₂ and high lighting will produce spectacular pearling and lush, compact growth.
